Environmental Guide
Be aware that there is much confusion and marketing hype over the words “environmentally friendly” or “environmentally safe”. In fact the 2008 publication on Green Marketing by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) states that “these statements are very vague and could potentially mislead consumers into thinking that the product causes no harm to the environment in its production, usage and disposal. Few, if any, products could make this claim. Almost all products have some adverse impact on the environment.”
We at Chemform agree with the ACCC and have defined several key product characteristics as being environmentally significant. A definition of each of these is provided below:
Biodegradable
Choosing a chemical product that is biodegradable can be a complex decision. The word “biodegradable” on product packaging has very little meaning, as there is no way of knowing what is meant by that word.
Biodegradability relates to the breakdown of substances in the environment by the natural action of bacteria. The rate of biodegradation is affected by the concentration of the material present, the level and type of microbial activity, temperature, degree of aeration, water solubility and other environmental factors.
Please note that the much used term “BIODEGRADABLE” has NO MEANING AT ALL when used alone.
Chemform uses organic surfactants in its product range that can originate from anywhere in the world. In order to classify the biodegradable nature of these ingredients it became necessary to use two standards:
- Australian Standard AS4351 “Biodegradability of Organic Substances in an Aqueous Medium”
- OECD “Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals”
With reference to these standards, we have classified the biodegradable organic surfactants within our products as readily biodegradable or inherently biodegradable. These are defined as:
READILY BIODEGRADABLE
The organic surfactants within the product have been proven to degrade by 70% or more in 28 days under test conditions.
INHERENTLY BIODEGRADABLE
The organic surfactants within the product have been proven to degrade by between 20% and 70% within 28 days under test conditions. The compound is unlikely to persist in the environment.
Detergent Free
This classification signifies those products which do NOT contain detergents. Detergent free products are safer for the environment. Unfortunately detergent free technology is still not available for all products. When detergents are required in a formulation, Chemform aims to provide readily biodegradable detergents in its products.
Phosphate Free
The Chemform product designated phosphorous- free does not contain phosphates or any other phosphorus containing compounds which means they are less damaging to the aquatic environment.
Phosphate or phosphorous acts as a nutrient which can promote algal growth and oxygen starvation (eutrophication) in lakes and waterways.
Non Hazardous/Non Dangerous Goods
Hazardous products and dangerous goods will present a risk to the unprotected user of the product. They may also present a significant environmental threat should they be stored, used or transported incorrectly resulting in leakage into the environment.
The Chemform product is classified as NON-HAZARDOUS according to the criteria of NOHSC/ASCC/Safe Work Australia.
The Chemform product is classified as a NON DANGEROUS GOOD according to the criteria of the Australian Dangerous Goods Code.
pH Neutral
The Chemform product has a neutral pH at the most concentrated recommended label dilution rate.
If products are outside a neutral pH range (5.5 – 9.0), they may have an adverse effect on the environment. Highly acidic or alkaline effluents can effect nutrient retention is soils which can affect plant growth, corrode sewer systems and increase toxicity to fish and other aquatic life forms in rivers, lakes and oceans. A neutral pH is important to avoid irritation to human skin and to avoid pH related health affects when using the product.
Portion Control
The Chemform product may be dispensed automatically or a controlled dosing method is provided (eg. a measuring scoop). This ensures that just the right dose and no more is used thereby eliminating waste which is one of the worst things for the environment because over use of a product will increase the effects of chemicals on the environment.
Water Saving
The Chemform product is ready to use, requires no water to be applied, requires little or no rinsing after application or is designed to save water. With water restriction in force, the correct use of these products will help salvage our most precious resource and save money on water use.
Quick Breaking
The Chemform product is designed to be quick breaking. All degreasers work by emulsifying or dissolving greases and oils in water. It is most advantageous if the resulting water and oil mixture (emulsion) separates rapidly thereby assisting in the removal of the oily phase in effluent treatment systems. Once this separation occurs, the oils may be collected and disposed of by a licensed waste contractor.
Whilst there is no Australian or international standard for a quick breaking product, Chemform define products that are quick breaking as those that form emulsions that begin to break (separate) within 5 minutes and achieve 90% separation within 30 minutes.
Labour/Energy Saving
The Chemform product is multifunctional, that is; performs the task of two or more products in one application; saving time, labour and money. Alternatively, the product can be used effectively in cold water where other similar products require warm/hot water to perform equally. Heating costs are reduced.
Chlorine Free
The Chemform product does not contain any chlorine or chlorine releasing agents. There is public debate to whether sodium hypochlorite and other chlorine releasers are in fact harmful to the environment. This section has been prepared for those who wish to use only chlorine free products.
Sodium hypochlorite bleach based cleaners are very effective stain removers and sanitisers Sodium hypochlorite does not contain ‘free’ chlorine. It degrades rapidly in sewer systems and the environment to form salt and water.
Bio-Active Ingredients
The Chemform product is based on naturally occurring active constituents (non hazardous bacteria and enzymes) that can remove waste and pollutants from the environment.
The use of products generated from biotechnology rather than using products based on synthetic chemicals. This helps reduce energy use, reduces the use of petroleum based starting materials and reduces the use of hazardous manufacturing. Products based on biotechnology therefore reduce the negative impact on the environment.
Recyclable Packaging
The used packaging for the Chemform product is able to be recycled by local recycling systems. Recycling packaging will conserve valuable resources and reduce the volume of packaging entering the landfill waste stream.
Plastic containers and plastic components are made of a plastic type that is recycled in Australia. The product packaging is marked with the appropriate resin identification code promulgated by the Plastics and Chemical Industry Association.
Waste Reduction Packaging
The Chemform product is a concentrated product so packaging is minimised (less waste) or the packaging used is of a compact nature to reduce landfill (e.g. cardboard carton preferable to plastic bucket). Reducing packaging will conserve valuable resources and reduce the volume of packaging entering the landfill waste stream.
VOC Free
The Chemform product does not contain any volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). VOC’s can react with nitrogen oxides in the presence of sunlight to produce ground level ozone and photochemical smog. Using products that are VOC free will help improve air quality.
A VOC is any chemical compound based on carbon chains or rings with a vapour pressure greater than 0.01kPa at 20 degrees C .
